Keep your Organic Produce Fresher for Longer
The truth of the matter is that Organic produce can & will expire faster than their conventional counterpart since they are free of chemical preservatives. Here are some ways to keep your produce for longer:
#1: Focus on Hydration, or rather, prevent dehydration
The number 1 culprit for making veggies
Keeping a plastic bag on the leafy greens or other veggies will help them stay hydrated for much longer! When you come home from a long busy day at work and find a box of deliciousness of your porch, we want your greens to still be perky and ready to eat! Or ready to last in your fridge for another week.
While we wish it were different, as it stands now, plastic bags are the most available and functional product for keeping produce from dehydrating and going to waste.
We’ve experimented with some other products and sadly, the biobags wind up turning many greens to compost and don’t actually help their longevity. Until more large corporations hop on board to drive packaging producers to make more eco-friendly packaging widely available, their prices are wildly exaggerated and their availability is very limited in size options and availability. We deeply wish they were more available and better non-plastic options that would keep fresh produce lasting well!
We would love nothing more than to find a sustainable option that works and is affordable so we can keep our prices the same and deliver food that lasts. If you find anything please send it our way!
We also encourage you to re-use the bags to give them a longer life. You can use them to store any veggies, And now with the new LA city ordinance you can use the bags to collect your kitchen scraps for the green trash bin! Learn More Here about the California Law that Fights food waste
#2 : Focus on these key principles to maximize longevity
Leaves’ will suck moisture from roots.
Root Veggies should have their leafy green tops removed before storing. Roots and tops should be stored separately.
Try to avoid stacking.
If your produce bowl or drawer is full to the brim, it’s likely that the weight from the top fruits is bearing down on the bottom layer causing bruising and preventing the greens from breathing
Organic Fruit has a higher sugar content and will ripen more quickly.
For this reason, I like to leave out on the counter only what NEEDS to ripen, or fruit that I know will get eaten within 2-3 days, the rest I keep in the fridge
Learn to cook with the often-wasted parts:
Hello carrot top pesto and roasted broccoli stems . You can also save peels and end pieces in a freezer bag and turn into veggie stock or freeze overripe fruit for smoothies or baking
Keep fresh food where you can see it and are more likely to eat it!
